With all the progress that we have made, the nonbinary and transgender community is still among the most marginalized, with trans women of color having the most difficulty. Being treated fairly in the workplace, finding safe home rentals, being considered for loan applications, or even completing high school can be a challenge when your very existence is subject to ridicule and violence.
This creates a set of circumstances that makes homelessness all too real. Many people turn to homeless shelters when they find themselves with nowhere else to go. But the harsh reality is that Asheville has no shelter that will appropriately house a transgender person. This adds to the danger faced by nonbinary and trans people who are living on the street. No safe place to sleep, falling temperatures, and no accommodating shelters in the area means that many face the cold winter months on the street with little to no support.
Tranzmission's Emergency Shelter Fund is set up to help eliminate the dangers of living on the street. Not only do we offer financial assistance to those who find themselves without a place to stay, we offer a stipend for those who can offer safe harbor to someone in need.
A donation of $10 will provide transportation to a safe location for someone in need.
A donation of $25 will provide clean, warm blankets.
A donation of $50 will provide a night in a motel .
A donation of $100 will provide a housing stipend.
A donation of $200 will provide food and essentials for an individual for a month.
Any donation, no matter how large or small will make a difference.
