Emergency Shelter Fund

Tranzmission was founded as a grassroots organization in 2001 with the conviction that equity for all people is a human right, regardless of gender identity and expression. What began as meetings in living rooms and coffee houses has since grown into a network of support, education, and advocacy, powered by community leadership and an often shoestring budget.
We maintain a wide range of programming providing vital direct and indirect services at the local, state, and national level. This programming includes: Name Change Project, Food Pantry, Gender Affirming Clothing Closest, Trans Information Initiative, Trans and Nonbinary Cultural Competency Training for medical facilities, schools and universities, religious institutions, and businesses, the Asheville Transformers Peer Support, Family Peer Support, Transfeminine Support Group, and QTPOC (queer and trans people of color) Support Group).
Because our community has been marginalized on so many different fronts (employment, housing, medical care, education, bathrooms) and because violence against our community members is a real and increasing threat, we must be prepared to act and react as needed. That can look like a gratis training program offered to a school or business in need. Sometimes, it looks like walking into the courthouse with someone so they aren't alone as they petition for a legal name change. Other times it looks like gathering before lawmakers at all levels and demanding change. Often times it looks like funding emergency shelter for someone who finds themselves without a safe place to sleep at night.
We are an ever-growing organization with expanding programming initiatives, and have recently registered as 501c-3 nonprofit, though our purpose remains as ever to improve the lives of nonbinary, transgender, and gender nonconforming individuals in western North Carolina and beyond through education, advocacy and support.
