STORIES OF SOME FAMILIES YOU CAN HELP!

Update posted 4 years ago

Just a few of the stories of the grandfamilies needing help this year:

Ms. Priscilla has had custody of her three grandchildren since their mother passed away two years ago. She is also caring for her two adult sons who are on the autism spectrum. They are living on a fixed income with just enough money to pay for necessities to get through the year, but will not have enough money for Christmas gifts.

Ms. Ella is a 64-year-old taking care of her teenage niece while living on a fixed income. Ms. Ella has multiple health issues, making it even more difficult to care for her niece physically and financially.

Ms. Fay and Mr. Trevor are 78 and 79 years old, caring for 14-year-old Brianna and 16-year-old Felecia, along with two adult grandchildren with special needs. They are living on a fixed income, with Mr. Trevor also working part time to bring a little extra funding into the home. Although the grandparents make ends meet, they do not have enough extra funds to provide a Christmas for the grandchildren.

Ms. Deborah is a disabled 60-year-old grandmother caring for her 7-year-old great-grandson who has special needs. Ms. Deborah describes Uriah as a "very special 7 year old who loves learning." The family has a very limited income and depends on food stamps, free school meals and food pantries to have enough to eat. There is nothing extra at the end of the month. Clothing comes for her grandson comes from the Foster Care Support Foundation. Ms. Debra would be grateful to be adopted so Uriah will have something for Christmas.

Ms. Samantha is a single grandmother raising her 2 year-old grandson who has autism. Due to COVID, she has been unable to work to provide for herself and Malik. Ms. Samantha has Lupus along with having a stroke last year, making the physical side of caring for Malik just as tough as the financial side. Christmas is going to be tough for Ms. Samantha this year due to her lack of income.

Ms. Kemetto is a grandmother raising her 10 yr. old granddaughter Janaisa. She describes Janaisa as "a special little girl who has been diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, but she's not her diagnosis and we strive everyday to be better". It has been some trying times over the past months with Covid 19 impacting this family a great deal.

Ms. Angela is raising two grandchildren, ages 11 and 14 while living on a fixed income. Along with caring for her two grandchildren, Ms. Angela experiences medical problems of her own while dealing with diabetes. These medical issues keep her in and out of doctor appointments often. Unfortunately, because of her fixed income, Ms. Angela is not able to provide anything extra for her grandchildren at Christmas time.

The holidays can be a difficult time for grandparents raising a second family, particularly when their grandchildren have special needs. This year, with COVID, things are even more stressful physically and financially.

When income is fixed, providing just the necessities can take everything you have. It hurts when you can’t provide much of a celebration for your grandchild…especially after the children have already lost so much.

Project GRANDD (Grandparents Raising And Nurturing Dependents with Disabilities) Adopt-a-Family lightens the load for vulnerable families at Christmas. We provide necessities like food and clothing as well as toys for the children and something nice for the grandparents - because they're always putting themselves last. We want them to know that they are cared about too. This year we have 62 families asking for help with Christmas.

Your tax-deductible gift ensures that struggling grandfamilies will have food, warm clothing, Christmas gifts and assistance with hardship expenses.
