$5,000 Goal

Michigan MATHCOUNTS is a math enrichment, coaching, and competition program for middle school students. Each year, 1100 mathletes compete in competitions throughout Michigan, with winners advancing to the state meet in March.  MATHCOUNTS stimulates student interest by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as school sports.

The Michigan MATHCOUNTS program is coordinated by volunteer members of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE).

Preparing today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders

MATHCOUNTS is one of the oldest and most successful education partnerships, involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors, and students.  In Michigan, MATHCOUNTS has been reaching out to students and teachers since 1983.

The program combines the use of MATHCOUNTS curriculum material and competitions, which challenge students’ math skills, develop self-confidence, and reward achievement.

The MATHCOUNTS program has two elements: the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series & the National Math Club.

There are many paths to math.  We work to ensure that all students discover theirs.

MATHCOUNTS influences students at an age when they are formulating attitudes about math. The program’s timing in the educational process is selected to impact students when they can still elect to take the appropriate math courses through high school, preparing them for college and math-oriented careers.

Each year, more than 900 Michigan students in over 110 schools participate in the program. They tell us this experience is often one of the most memorable and fun of their middle school years.

Michigan Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) Efforts

Every year Members of MSPE volunteer to run 15 Chapter competitions across the State of Michigan.  All of our chapters run either 1 or 2 competitions during the month of February.  This is an entirely volunteer effort to bring the competition program to over 1100 Michigan middle school students annually.

The MATHCOUNTS Foundation (the National Program) provides $5.00 per registered student to the Michigan Engineers Foundation (MEF, MSPE's Foundation) to offset costs for the Chapter and State Competitions.  Each chapter then receives $2.50 per student of that funding from the MEF, with the remainder being used for the State Competition.  Additional funding is provided through individual Chapter fundraising efforts such as golf outings, raffles, and member donations.

This fundraising effort is to assist the Chapters in their fundraising by providing an online platform they can use to accept donations.

We encourage our members and other volunteers to assist in the competition day programs as graders, proctors, or visitors to the Countdown Round, a head-to-head timed problem solving portion of the competition.

If you are interested in more information about the program, please contact Nancy McClain, PE, F.NSPE at NMM_MATHCOUNTS@sbcglobal.net.
