Utah Animal Rights Coalition

Utah Animal Rights Coalition (UARC) is an education and advocacy organization with an emphasis on issues facing communities in Utah. We are volunteer-run, and believe grassroots organizing is how we create meaningful impact in our own communities. Animals in Utah are suffering by the millions inside factory farms, fur farms, laboratories, and "zoos" like Lagoon. We exist for them.

On a 98 degree summer day when Jerry the horse was pulling a carriage and collapsed in the streets of downtown Salt Lake City, a UARC board member was one of the first people on the scene and immediately called UARC to help document the scene. Photos and videos of Jerry taken by UARC sparked public outcry, and together with PETA we launched a campaign to end horse-drawn carriages in Salt Lake City. Through grassroots protests, city council meetings, and public education, UARC successfully convinced the city to ban horse-drawn carriages downtown. We are proud that we made our city be one of the first on the right side of history on this issue, and strive to win many more victories for animals in Utah.

In addition to strategic campaigns, UARC encourages vegan living as a way for everyone to choose compassion over cruelty. In 2016, we organized our first SLC VegFest, a family-friendly event where people can try vegan foods, listen to informative speakers, learn from vegan athletes, and more. Nearly 5,000 people attended, and we expect to see just as many this year! SLC VegFest is a FREE event so that no one is denied the opportunity to learn about being vegan. The expenses for UARC are more than $20,000 to put on the festival each year.

UARC has other ongoing programs like the Vegan Food for Good Project, where UARC volunteers learn to make an affordable and healthy vegan dinner and serve it to youth at-risk of or currently experiencing homelessness. We partner with the Youth Resource Center, and provide all of the quality ingredients we need for the vegan dinner we cook for the teens.
