Update #1
Mooresburg Community Association (MCA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which provides much needed services to older adults and adults with disabilities in rural Hawkins County, TN, enabling them to live as independently as possible, for as long as possible and avoid unnecessary moves to long-term care facilities. MCA is committed to identifying and serving low-income residents who live on the fringes with limited access to resources, particularly healthy food. Our programs work to decrease social isolation and loneliness while ensuring the health of our residents in Mooresburg, by providing an array of services to improve the quality of life and health equity of its residents and benefits community wellness.
Our services and programs for Mooresburg residents include:
-
Meals in the Hills
- For older adults aged 60+ and adults with disabilities unable to prepare meals for themselves; delivered 5 days a week; 25% of our recipients also receive 2 additional meals on Friday to support them over the weekend.
- Freshly prepared in-house by our cook Linda, and delivered 5 days a week. Meals are nutritionally dense and include a 4 oz protein, 1/2 cup of fruit, 1 cup of veggies, and a bread/starch.
- Average of 1700 meals a month.
- Congregate meals are available at the center for older ladies Mondays and Wednesdays and older gentlemen on Tuesdays at 11:30 am. Our community room is small, therefore we have to have them on different days. We are in the process of building a new Educational and Recreational Building.
- Our food pantry provides nonperishable and canned goods to families in Mooresburg on a monthly basis.
- We provide assistance with applications for heating assistance, Food Stamps, TennCare, and other state and local social programs.
- MCA's senior center offers educational and recreational activities, including Monday morning Bingo, Wednesday Chair Yoga, and arts and crafts classes on both days.
- Our Friends & Family Thrift Store is also located on-site to support our community through taking donations and being an affordable option for individuals in need.
- Our Claws & Paws Pet Program enables us to support our recipients with pets, providing them with at least 2 pounds of food per month.
Mooresburg Community Center reopened in 2021 after remaining safe and healthy during the COVID crisis. Our volunteers and recipients maintained strict protocols and meals were prepared and delivered every day during the pandemic. MCA was also designated as a Tennessee Senior Center in 2022, and continues to support our community in any way we see fit.
MCA applies for and receives grant funding to enable us to continue and expand our services, as well as accepting in-kind donations from locals. We provide nonperishable food pantry bags to individuals that come to our center in need living in Mooresburg.
"Doc" Trent, a 81 year old Meals in the Hills recipient, says "those ladies down at the center are doing good things. If we didn't get these meals ever' day, I dunno what we'd do.” Mr. Trent is only one of the people whose lives “remain intact” through the Meals in the Hills program. Without the MCA, the meals and other services would cease to exist.
Your gift will help us achieve our goals on behalf of the older adults in East Tennessee!
