Women Wonder Writers is a non-profit organization which provides cultural arts and restorative justice education to students impacted by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). We serve students in traditional educational sites, alternative education sites, as well as those experiencing incarceration.
One site where we provide programming is the California City Correctional Facility (CAC). Currently at the CAC, there are approximately 2,300 students impacted by incarceration. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, family visits have stopped. These students are searching for materials with which to create murals to express themselves, provide hope, and give them a sense of purpose throughout these uncertain times.
Black youth are over-represented in juvenile facilities. While 14% of all youth under 18 in the U.S. are Black, 42% of boys and 35% of girls in juvenile facilities are Black. The trend continues with adult incarceration where 38% of adults experiencing incarceration are Black although Black adults make up 12% of the U.S. population. Now is a critical time more than ever to provide resources to Black youths and to stand in solidarity to affirm that Black Lives Matter.
At just under $14 per student, we are able to provide and deliver art materials such a brushes, varnish, and paint to these students. Our goal is to provide art supplies to all 2,300 students impacted by incarceration at CAC. Please help support these students impacted by incarceration by helping to provide art supplies to those in need. Every little bit helps!
