Grassroots Fundraiser for Women Against Mass Incarceration
Women Against Mass Incarceration (WAMI) is a grassroots organization of reentry professionals, advocates and activists working to re-imagine our communities and end the incarceration of women and girls. WAMI is based in Bridgeport, CT, but works across the state.
Women Against Mass Incarceration has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2020. Please consider making a contribution today to support them and read more about their work below.
"We are raising money to support our three main campaigns for 2020. Our campaigns for 2020 include:
1. Identifying and supporting incarcerated women as they seek clemency. WAMI has already identified potential clemency candidates and is building a network throughout Connecticut for community outreach campaigns and organizing strategies on their behalf.
2. Hosting weekly Participatory Defense Meetings and support groups for women and girls returning home. These meetings offer individuals, families and community members a sense of support for themselves and their loved ones. Case information is reviewed, court strategies are shared and implemented, and testimonials are collected.
3. Conducting policy and local organizing campaigns. WAMI is campaigning around e-carceration surveillance in our community. We are also researching local reproductive health and justice issues - which are major concerns in our communities."
Women Against Mass Incarceration COVID-19 Response:
"WAMI has responded to the coronavirus pandemic by writing a letter addressing the Governor, DOC and the Board of Pardon and Parole to release women from prison. We also collaborated with other organizations for mobile protest and we are having a panel discussion about COVID-19 and the impact it has on communities of color."
