Since schools across the country let out last spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students have struggled to keep up with online course work, or failed to attend online classes all together. Reasons for truancy include lack of internet at home, unsafe home environments or lack of motivation. In addition to the struggles of online coursework, racial disparities in the educational system are becoming painfully apparent as Black and Minority student education gaps are widening. To help mitigate these issues, Asheville City Schools has created a PODS (Positive Opportunities Develop Success) program, which consists of a PODS leader and up to ten (10) students, who come together at a single location to complete online coursework. Students participating in the PODS classroom are provided with an environment more conducive to successful learning, and are given additional support where needed.

Western Carolina Rescue Ministries (WCRM) has partnered with Asheville City Schools and Gladiator Sports Academy to open a PODS classroom on campus, which is targeting specifically high-risk high school athletes. Students spend the morning completing their online course work and during the afternoons are given the opportunity for athletic training and workouts with Gladiator Sports Academy.

This dual partnership allows these students opportunities for both academic and physical growth. Additionally, the PODS classroom provides an opportunity for positive relationship building and mentorship for participating students.
