Grassroots Fundraiser for Taller GiRASOL
Taller GIRASOL is a multilingual, multi-racial and multi-cultural community arts and action project based in East San Jose, CA, that merges popular and traditional arts with social justice and solidarity action. Through art events, and social justice workshops and trainings, Taller GiRASOL creates spaces and moments for community, healing and collective power.
Taller GiRASOL has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2020. Please consider making a contribution today to support them and read more about their work below.
"Taller GiRASOL requests $10,000 in project support for the creation of a new organizing project called GOAL - Grassroots Organizing and Arts Leadership. This project will be rooted in the community organizing practice and discipline while linking art and artistic expression to solidarity and social action. Target participants include residents in East San José, specifically, local artesanas, youth of color creatives and artists, and in particular queer, trans and gender-nonconforming folks.
The GOAL project will take place in two cycles: one in Summer 2020 and another in Winter 2021. GOAL will recruit 6 local community self-identified creatives to participate in a 120-day program, that includes four day-long organizing skills building & field practice trainings. Trainings will take place once a month for four months. GOAL participants will develop and implement a story collecting project and conduct regular fieldwork. They will engage their immediate networks, as well as collect stories using a survey tool. In addition to learning about community members, they will also learn about community problems and probe for solutions."
Taller GiRASOL COVID-19 Response:
"Now, more than ever, our communities realize that mutual support and imagining a new world go hand in hand. Taller GiRASOL is rooted in art, solidarity and action, and as a new reality of life under Covid19 takes hold, we are embracing community organizing as both an social instrument to ensure that people's basic needs are met but also as a means of putting into action the seemingly radical notion that everyday people aspiring and working collectively have the power to self-determine the future of their lives and their communities."
