Mission
POWER is an organization of low-income parents and allies advocating for a strong social safety net while working toward a world where children and caregiving are truly valued, and the devastation of poverty has been eradicated.
POWER has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2020. Please consider making a contribution today to support them and read more about their work below.

Our main programs and how we carry out our mission is through outreach and advocacy and our project, The Alchemilla Economic Collaborative. In the past we have done outreach primarily at the welfare office. Despite the challenges of doing outreach in the age of COVID-19 we have found new ways to connect with people and have been doing outreach at street feeds and at a tent city and church where unhoused people park and sleep. We tabled at the event “Voices United for Black Lives” and we have been placing our brochures at the few organizations that remain open to the public and have begun to do online events on Zoom like craft nights and a voters roundtable.
The Alchemilla Feminist Economic Collaborative is an egalitarian, matriarchal business community. We support each other through collaboration and mentorship. In previous years, Alchemilla held weekly pop up markets during the spring, summer and fall, where Alchemilla entrepreneurs were able to network, establish a customer base, gain skills, earn money, and support each other to create sustainable livelihoods. We have cancelled this year’s market for safety and are currently working on an Alchemilla website for online sales and marketing.
How is POWER helping your community work toward justice through the COVID-19 pandemic?
"During this pandemic POWER has continued to work with and share resources with other groups that are doing community organizing and working towards justice for marginalized people. We’ve adapted to meet the challenges of doing outreach during a pandemic by doing what we have always done, going where the poor people are and building new community connections. We have learned to use zoom effectively for meetings and community gatherings and our telephone and online advocacy continues."
