The Human Rights Coalition
Mission
The Human Rights Coalition (HRC) seeks to dismantle and abolish the prison system and replace it with systems based on accountability, safety, fairness, and resilience, with a focus on healing instead of punishing. HRC was founded with the belief that every human being, regardless of conviction, judgement, or citizenship status deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
Human Rights Coalition has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2021. Please consider making a contribution today to support them and read more about their work below.
Request
We are requesting support to assist us in continue growing our 20-year #SolidarityNotSolitary campaign across Pennsylvania to fight to abolish long-term solitary confinement and torture in the prison system. We will pay a stipend to our #SolidarityNotSolitary organizer, who will be tasked with community outreach, leadership development, coalition building, and strategic planning. This organizer would also do outreach among incarcerated people to document abuse and mistreatment while in long-term solitary confinement. We will prioritize hiring someone who was previously incarcerated in solitary confinement.
We would also coordinate regular Virtual Events, called “Voices From The Inside” where directly impacted people can speak out about their experiences with solitary confinement, Covid-19 lockdowns, and other prison abuse. We would pay a stipend to speakers at these events and would prioritize speakers from marginalized communities and with direct experience with solitary confinement.
"With our "Free The Vulnerable" campaign, the Human Rights Coalition is calling upon Governor Wolf to release people from prison in order to save lives. We are organizing and mobilizing to push the Governor to use his executive power of reprieve to immediately release people from prison, prioritizing those who are elderly (over the age of 50), medically vulnerable, and/or within a year of the end of their sentence. Reducing the prison population by thousands will make social distancing in prison more possible. We are working in coalition with dozens of organizations to push to #FreeTheVulnerable and to increase access to PPE and vaccines for incarcerated people."
