The Fund for Empowerment’s Houseless Leadership Project seeks to elevate the voices of the members of the Houseless Leadership Project to civic discourse and political protests and actions, as well as legal action. This funding would not be used for litigation, but rather community organizing.
In our community organizing, we have formerly and currently houseless people compensated for outreach, advocacy and public speaking. We organize media events and events with the houseless community of Phoenix.
The issues addressed are reflective of the extreme forces of mortality and criminalization of houseless people in Phoenix. We have been featured in over 20 news articles since our inception in 2018. These articles cover the following theses: deaths on County Shelter lots, criminalization of sleeping and property ownership, and access to systemic resources. We believe that unless the voices of houseless people contribute to the political discourse they will be absented from the de facto policy.
How is Fund for Empowerment helping their community work toward justice through the COVID-19 pandemic?
"Our work in the pandemic has focused on the policies which shape houseless lives under COVID-19. Along with distributing 10,000 masks, we create opportunities for protest and social discourse. We focus on criminalization, deaths on the street and in County-run facilities, and COVID-19."
