DAYUM fights for accountability from leaders, justice for our communities, and a seat at the table for all marginalized youth. DAYUM believes in a world where all youth are safe and live with dignity and power in a culture of belonging.
Detroit Area Youth Uniting Michigan has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2021. DAYUM is a radical, visionary youth-run organization building youth power to make concrete policy changes across Michigan. As such, DAYUM's work is emergent and unpredictable - a year ago we would not have known that a pandemic would trigger widespread depression and anxiety in youth across the country and that we would spend a majority of our 2020 budget on mutual aid and mental health support for young people. We would not have known that we would develop dozens of new youth leaders through an innovative community organizing internship program and autonomous youth-led marches in support of the Movement for Black Lives.
What we know for sure is that in 2021 DAYUM will continue to lead programs and direct actions based on youth interest and agency, will continue to center those most impacted by the issues we address and will push legislators and decision-makers to listen to young people about the issues that impact their lives.
How is DAYUM helping their community work toward justice through the COVID-19 pandemic?
"Since the pandemic began, DAYUM has been working to support and protect youth mental health. We distributed over 200 care kits across Metro Detroit, supported students leading Black Lives Matter protests, hosted a day of healing, and fought for equity in online learning. We have pushed schools to listen to youth voices and be responsive to the needs of their students during this crisis."
