The red panda is the original panda, discovered some 50 years before the Giant panda. Its name comes from the Nepalese word: "nigalya punya" for "bamboo eater."
This adorable species plays a critical role in the conservation of the Eastern Himalayan broadleaf forest. The red panda is a charismatic species, and as such, plays an ambassador role to help tell the world about how important it is to protect this region.
The red panda is a landscape species. When you protect red panda habitat, you take part in protecting hundreds of other species, such as the clouded leopard, the Himalayan black bear, the Dhole (wild dog), the pangolin, the yellow-throated Marten and literally hundreds of bird and plant species as well.
Red Panda Network invites you to join our community-based effort to create long-term sustainability for the region. Together, we can make a difference for the survival of this beautiful animal and the landscape it represents.
