On January 28th I am finally resolving a 31 year old health issue by having an above knee amputation on my left leg. I was able to get into a study with Harvard and MIT which makes me the 4th person in the world to get a new type of amputation above the knee that preserves the neuromuscular connections in my foot and calf and wraps them into the stump. I will be a guinea pig for MIT as they develop a bionic leg that can be controlled by the brain just as a regular leg is. In 5-10 years when the new leg is FDA approved I will be one of the first folks able to get one. Although some of the medical expenses are covered through my insurance and the study, my co-pays, and the 4-6 weeks of stay and recovery in Boston post-op are not. I will also be mostly unable to work 2 of my jobs for the 3-6 month period after surgery until I have learned to walk on my new leg. I would be incredibly grateful to those who are able and happy to support me in this journey. I will be giving people regular updates on the whole process at my new blog at robinkyle.com please follow my story there.
