Civic engagement for me began at an early age. As a young man, I marched with my local NAACP to the courthouse with the oldest continuous court records in the U.S. to promote civil/voting rights.
That experience led me to march with Dr. King's son and surviving family members in defense of those same rights decades later.
Protecting vulnerable communities is in my DNA because everyone deserves a meaningful opportunity to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness without the criminalization of identity or circumstances.
That's what drew me to Florida Justice Institute (FJI) and what makes me proud to serve as its leader.
For over 45 years, FJI engaged in targeted civil rights litigation to achieve widespread and meaningful social progress.
FJI works to end systems of oppression and improve living conditions for vulnerable populations across Florida. Through a combination of class action and individual cases, FJI leverages its legal expertise to pursue access to justice that transcend typical lawsuits.
FJI also seeks to alleviate poverty and advocates for the right to self-determination by encouraging smarter approaches to housing solutions while representing those experiencing homelessness and low-income residents in cases that seek to eliminate laws that criminalize someone’s lifestyle, their identity or circumstances, and other social determinants.
FJI works to ensure governments and businesses maintain accessible facilities, which enable people with disabilities receive the accommodations they need to earn a living wage with dignity and respect.
