$5,000 goal
Once, there may have been more than a million Puerto Rican parrots all over the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, today there are fewer than 700 left in the world. Our program is dedicated to bringing this critically endangered parrot back from the edge of oblivion.
Your timely gift will aid our:
1. Captive breeding program
Help us purchase supplies to maintain our captive breeding center, build new enclosures, and care for the birds housed in captivity. When you support the captive breeding program you help the population grow so that more birds can be released into the wild.
2. Construction and installation of new nest boxes
Deforestation has reduced the number of natural cavities available for parrots to nest in. Help us to acquire materials to build and install new nest boxes in the trees so that wild parrots will always have a place to raise the next generation of chicks.
3. Research and monitoring of wild populations
Help us to purchase important field research equipment, such as leg bands and radio collars. This equipment allows us to track the parrots in the wild and determine how well the birds are surviving and how much the population is growing. They may also help us rescue sick or injured birds in wild.
4. Monitoring and protection of wild nests
Monitoring wild nests is a crucial part of ensuring the survival of chicks. By helping us to purchase monitoring equipment, including infrared cameras, field DVRs, and tree climbing gear, we can protect the wild chicks and make sure that as many as possible fledge each year.
And other related conservation activities.
World Parrot Trust (WPT) has partnered with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (PRDNER) to make this goal a reality. With your help, we can continue to support the captive breeding and release of Puerto Rican parrots and ensure that the skies of Puerto Rico will once again be filled with the calls of these enchanting birds.
You can be the one to help the long-term survival and recovery of the Puerto Rican parrot. Please, donate today!
