From Everest to Denali

With eyes set on conquering North America’s tallest peak, 2023 is shaping up to be a memorable year for Green Beret Racing. GBR athlete and mountaineer Jason Howell will lead a team of four other Green Berets and one former SOF enabler on an expedition to conquer Denali in the Alaska Range this June. Jason’s successful ascent of Mount Everest in May of 2022, notably done mostly without supplemental oxygen, was made possible by GBR and our generous community of sponsors and supporters. We aim to get this team to the mountain for a successful summit, and we need your help to do it! 

Climbing Mount Everest required Jason to push through barriers of doubt, fear and loss, and ultimately demonstrated the power of perseverance through adversity to accomplish a goal. As many of us in this community understand, grappling with obstacles from deployment to loss to constant change can be difficult and taxing, but learning to navigate life’s challenges through healthy habits and mindsets is essential to living fully and well. Our goal is to help athletes like Jason and his team pursue those dreams and challenges that give life greater purpose and meaning, something that multiplies exponentially when shared with teammates beyond oneself. 

Our Denali expedition team is preparing extensively over the next six months, and will spend many days and nights honing their mountaineering skills and learning to work together as a team. Hand-picked to join this expedition, the team includes current mountain warfare instructors Wade and Bobby, and former 10th SFG (A) PAO Angela. Half of the team has never attempted to climb a mountain so high, but intense passion mixed with collective determination will give this team the strength it needs to conquer the Great One. 

For these mountaineers, this is the next experience on the lifelong path of conquering great mountains, literal and metaphorical. For Green Beret Racing, this is one of many opportunities we are grateful to have to provide critical suicide prevention and mental health awareness to both current and future competitors.
