"Before New Voices I was a shy and very quiet person, and now I am outgoing and I talk too much. Now I try new things and think differently than what I used to."
Founded in 1974, People’s Light serves as one of Pennsylvania’s largest professional non-profit theatres. We are known for our resident company of artists, eclectic mix of productions, and innovative work with young people.
New Voices is the education scholarship program that People's Light extends to young people from the city of Chester, for 28 years running. Chester students come to People's Light for classes throughout the school year, full day theatre programs in the summer, performances of plays in our regular season, and rehearsals and performances of their own play. They receive hours and hours of instruction, mentoring, and inspiration. We are committed to providing round-trip transportation, meals, and full scholarships for all students in the New Voices program. Students speak of the life-changing opportunity this has been for them – in fact, New Voices is currently under the direction of one of our first New Voices students from 1990! This work takes resources, and you can help!
