Once thriving in the forests of Central America, the Yellow-naped Amazon is now critically endangered.
On Roatán, the subspecies endemic to the Bay Islands (Amazona auropalliata caribaea) once flourished across the island. However, habitat loss due to human activity, hurricanes, and poaching has drastically reduced their population.
Without immediate intervention, their vibrant presence and iconic calls could vanish forever.
Our nest box initiative provides safe, secure nesting spaces for the Yellow-naped Amazon, giving these incredible parrots a fighting chance to rebuild their population and thrive once again in Roatán.
How You Can Support the Project:
Your gift will help protect and restore Yellow-naped Amazons by funding:
Construction and installation of nest boxes: Help us acquire materials to build and install nest boxes in key habitats where both the environment and local communities are committed to protecting these birds.
Monitoring of nests: By conducting nest monitoring, we can increase nest success, protecting chicks and ensuring as many as possible fledge each year. Collecting data on the factors affecting egg and chick survival will also guide future conservation efforts and ensure lasting impact.
When you donate, you can also leave a comment suggesting how you wish to support the project:
- Sponsor a nest: We’ll assign you a nest in a key habitat, protecting Yellow-naped Amazons where they need it most.
- Sponsor a nest in your garden (Roatán only): If your property is suitable, we’ll install a nest box at your location; otherwise, your sponsorship will support a nest box in an area where it can make the greatest impact.
Every contribution helps. Together, we can secure a future where the Yellow-naped Amazon can safely raise its chicks and fill Roatán's skies with their unforgettable song.
Donate before Feb. 15 to have the best
chance of having an active nest box!
