Mothers of Murdered Offspring (MOM-O) is a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization with a dual mission to support families through the cycle of grief and devastation that murder causes and address the root causes of violence in our communities.

Founded from Tragedy, Driven by Hope

MOM-O was born out of unimaginable loss. In February 1993, co-founder Dee Sumpter's daughter, Shawna, was brutally murdered by a serial killer. At that time, no organizations existed to help families navigate the immense pain, anger, and grief caused by such devastating loss. From this heartbreak came a mission: to ensure no family has to face the aftermath of violence alone.

For over 31 years, MOM-O has provided vital support to thousands of families, friends, and communities affected by murder. Through compassionate care, advocacy, and intervention, we strive to restore hope and healing in the wake of tragedy.

Dual Mission: Support and Prevention

1. Support for Families: MOM-O walks alongside families through the difficult journey of grief, offering comfort, resources, and community. We provide ongoing emotional support and serve as a pillar for those navigating sudden and profound loss.
2. Violence Prevention: Committed to stopping violence before it starts, we offer programs and activities that engage youth, families, and communities. These initiatives address systemic issues like poverty, substance abuse, and trauma—factors that contribute to cycles of violence.
