Malcolm Needs Your Help

In 1980, at the age of 20, Malcolm Alexander was wrongly convicted of a crime in Louisiana and sent to a former plantation, now known as Angola prison, to serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole. He spent 38 years fighting for his freedom.

The Innocence Project took on his case and obtained DNA testing in 2016 that excluded him from crime scene evidence. 

On Jan. 30, 2018, Malcolm was finally exonerated and reunited with his loved ones. For the first time in decades, he was able to hug his son, who was just two years old when Malcolm was wrongfully convicted. His dog Inn (short for Innocence), who he raised while in prison, was freed and reunited with him the next day.

At Angola, Malcolm became a skilled carpenter and craftsman, building rocking chairs and making intricate jewelry. Malcolm hopes to continue his craft and is starting a jewelry business through which to support himself.

Help Malcolm Support Himself

Thanks to a previous fundraiser, Malcolm was able to purchase a truck that enabled him to pursue woodwork and get around town with Inn.

However, Malcolm still has not received any compensation from the state of Louisiana for the nearly four decades he lost. Throughout the pandemic, Malcolm has been working hard to support himself and keep his family safe.
