Dale Carnegie Inspires FCA Youth!
Dale Carnegie Long Island provided one of their world famous workshops to youth who are engage in a range of Family & Children’s Association’s (FCA) programs. The training focused on helping youth improve their community and strengthen their people skills to better their futures. Dale Carnegie generously provided the workshop at no cost as part of the Global Day of Giving. FCA was chosen as Dale Carnegie Long Island’s charity of choice for 2017, helping raise awareness of the vulnerable communities many youth navigate to succeed in life.
FCA youth in attendance are engaged with FCA’s Learning Center, Family Mediation, PINS Diversion, Project Independence and more.
The Learning Center is a resource for what may be Long Islands most at –risk population. It serves youth who are or were homeless and who reside in our residential programs, or our youth who are preparing to age out of the foster care system. For the most part, the youth in our programs do not attend high schools that promote a college –going culture, or due to the hardships these youth have had, the trajectory of college has not been a priority. These are all disconnected youth where often it is the transition coaches that encourage the youth believe in themselves and consider college a realistic goal. The Learning Center Supports these efforts and hones in on college-related concerns such as applying to schools, obtaining financial Aid etc. We encourage every young person we serve to look beyond limitations of their current situation and plan for a future whereby they are prepared to compete in a job market for rewarding careers aligned with their individual talents and aspirations. We help youth prepare for the SAT exams, help them complete financial aid forms and college applications, accompany them on college tours and celebrate their academic achievements with a scholarship program funded by our Board of Trustees and other donors.
Family & Children's Association (FCA) is proud to operate the Learning Center. It's a central learning site for all FCA’s programs, providing workshops and learning opportunities for youth. Workshops are supportive, social and psycho- educational; all aimed at individual growth- to assist our youth successfully transition into adulthood. In 2016, we had more than 75 workshops, with a duplicated count of 100 youth in attendance. We have expanded our commitment to the Learning Center and in the first 6 months of 2017, we had an unduplicated count of 118 youth and a duplicated count of 396 youth participating in 58 Learning Center workshops. Topics ranging from planned parenthood, nutrition, college readiness, interviewing skills, finances, social media rights and wrongs, dressing for success, healthy relationships, LGBTQ education, daily living, house-keeping, cooking, trauma- based group work- to social outings to enhance socialization, life skills and personal skill development.
