Having a safe home is perhaps more important right now than ever before. Before this pandemic, many of us took having a safe home for granted. Home was where we laid our heads after a long day of work and where we relaxed with friends on the weekends. But as our world has rapidly changed and we are forced inwards, we realize how our homes have been safe havens all along.
For many people, Legal Aid is the last lifeline between a home and the street. Even now, in a time when evictions are supposed to be frozen, we’ve seen people falling through the cracks. Long-time residents of extended stay hotels -- people with nowhere else to turn -- are facing homelessness at an incredibly vulnerable and dangerous time. Thousands of others are protected temporarily from eviction while the courts are closed, but still know that their relief will be short-lived.
We’re gearing up to fight for our clients’ homes when the courts re-open. For now, we continue to work safely from our own homes while we navigate the changing laws and prepare for the challenges ahead.
You can help keep people safely housed by making a gift to Atlanta Legal Aid. All funds will go directly to providing high-quality legal help to people who are facing the loss of their homes because of this crisis.
Whether or not you are able to make a gift right now, we want to hear from you: What does home mean to you? Take a selfie or a picture of your home (could include your family, your pets, your couch, etc. -- the possibilities are endless!) and share it on your social media accounts with the answer to the prompt, “What does home mean to you?” Tag us @atlantalegalaid and use #KeepPeopleHoused to show your support for Atlanta Legal Aid.
