I am participating in the 20th Annual Cycle Across Illinois, which will benefit the Illinois Chapter of Concerns Of Police Survivors (ICOPS). The 305 mile ride starts July 11th at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and finishes July 14 in Chicago at the CPD on Michigan Ave. Cycle Across Illinois began in 2005 as a memorial and fundraising bicycle ride across the state. The participants are a very special group of survivors, police officers, and supporters.
During the pandemic, essential workers were crucial in keeping our communities safe and functioning. These dedicated individuals continued to work, often at significant personal risk, to ensure that critical services were maintained. They faced immense challenges, including exposure to COVID-19, long hours, and increased stress. Many essential workers contracted the virus, and some tragically lost their lives. I lost my younger brother Jeff on December 23, 2021, after he battled the virus for nearly a year. He was an essential worker for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and contracted COVID-19 in early January 2021.
Losing a loved one because they were performing their job is a heart-wrenching experience. They were more than just uniformed figures: fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, partners, and friends. The ones left behind (survivors) find themselves with anger, grief, heartache, and disbelief.
I am riding to honor my brother, the other fallen officers, and the survivors of the fallen officers. There are several ways to support this cause:
