I am incredibly passionate about women's rights and global gender equality, and I need your help to reach my personal goal of raising $2,000 that will go towards empowering women in Cambodia.
Support global gender equality with us by brightening the futures and enriching the lives of Cambodian women. Every contribution counts!
The Problem:
Cambodia is a country that continues to combat gender inequality. Violence against women and girls is perpetuated by traditional gender norms, and social services or support to survivors of sexual assault or domestic violence are not systematically provided, available, or accessible.
Although there are policies and legislation that make violence against women illegal, these progressive laws are relatively new, and in order to be effective, will need to be accompanied by widespread social attitude shifts that will make gender equality a reality. Mental health is a new concept in Cambodia, so part of offering education for women and girls is acknowledging the difficult spaces they come from, and how that potentially creates barriers to their learning.
The Solution:
In response to these issues, WECO is working alongside the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) to construct a childcare facility in Siem Reap that will enable more women to attend their free educational workshops. The WRC is a comprehensive system of social work, education, and community-building, and provides women around Siem Reap with emotional support, counseling, and referral services.
The current lack of childcare restricts women from pursuing roles other than primarily mothers and domestic laborers, so building this childcare center will give women the freedom to focus on their personal, professional, and educational development.
Once it’s completed, women in Siem Reap will have greater access to knowledge on women’s health, women’s rights and gender roles, positive parenting, and financial literacy.
Suggested Donations:
$10 = educational materials for 10 women
$25 = 25 children's books
$30 = 1 women's rights workshop for 10 women
$50 = 1 health workshop for high-schoolers
$75 = children's bedding for the center
$150 = 1 month's salary for a childcare teacher
