As we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, ADP wants to draw attention to the realities of women in rural communities in Rwanda and Uganda, where approximately seventy percent of rural women practice agriculture. While climate change affects everyone, men and women manage natural resources differently because of their different roles. Women face more significant challenges because they are tasked with securing water, food, fuelwood, and other subsistence needs. Still, they are less equipped to withstand climate change adversities or adapt their farming practices. That is because rural women farmers have little to no access to government-provided extension services, credit, efficient agricultural equipment, or improved inputs (fertilizer or seeds) – all contributing to their marginalization, further cascading to their children and communities.
Understanding these vulnerabilities, ADP facilitates hands-on technical training that addresses soil fertility, water resource management, climate adaptation, weed and pest management, and harvest and post-harvest best practices, to name a few. We also support them with modern farming tools such as greenhouses, machinery, irrigation systems, improved seed, fertilizer, and other complementary inputs.
In the spirit of Earth Day, ADP is re-launching our campaign as Invest in Women = Invest in Our Planet. We aim to raise $7,500 to enable more rural women farmers to deploy mitigations and adaptation strategies to protect their land and propel their communities into future prosperity.
We are truly grateful for your past support. We hope you will consider a special Earth Day contribution of $25, $50, $100, or $250 to help us reach our goal and minimize the adverse effects of climate change on the lives and livelihoods of women in East Africa. Your gift will impact the women we work with, their families, and their communities. Will you stand in the gap with us?
