Invest in Community Organizing
Tuesday, May 5th is #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving in response to the unprecedented crises posed by COVID-19. The dual public health and economic impact of COVID-19 will weigh most heavily on marginalized communities, including working-class people, people of color, women, LGBTQ+, immigrants, people with disabilities, incarcerated people and people experiencing homelessness.
While there is a strong need for direct services right now, Peace Development Fund is rallying our supporters to invest in community organizing by supporting the thirteen organizations participating in Grassroots Funding Week. PDF strongly believes that directly impacted communities organizing for justice will be where the most important solutions to this crisis will unfold over the long haul.
That’s why we are asking you to invest in grassroots community organizers who are working harder than ever to fight inequality, build resilience, and demand that no one be left behind because of COVID-19. Please give today to support their work and build toward a more just future.
All of the money raised through this campaign will be distributed evenly to the thirteen community organizations participating in Grassroots Funding Week.
Grassroots Funding Week is a week-long crowdfunding campaign to support some of our 2020 Community Organizing Grantees - read more about them or donate to them directly by clicking the links below.
Here is how some of the organizations we are raising money for are responding to COVID-19:
"Now, more than ever, our communities realize that mutual support and imagining a new world go hand in hand. Taller GiRASOL, based in East San Jose, CA, is rooted in art, solidarity and action, and as a new reality of life under Covid19 takes hold, we are embracing community organizing as both a social instrument to ensure that people's basic needs are met but also as a means of putting into action the seemingly radical notion that everyday people aspiring and working collectively have the power to self-determine the future of their lives and their communities."
"Unchained, based in Syracuse NY, is an organization led by people behind bars and their loved ones, and we have been on the front lines of the pandemic in jails and prisons. With our partners across the state, we have won the release of more than 700 people detained on technical parole violations and are fighting for thousands more to be sent home where they belong. We are also working to ensure that people left behind are able to communicate with their loved ones frequently since visits have been suspended indefinitely, and that incarcerated people have access to adequate hygiene and cleaning supplies and quality medical care."
