In 2011, Scraplanta started off as an art program for an arts non-profit known as WonderRoot. The programs were hosted by Scraplanta's founding members who taught children how to use found objects to create art instead of waste. As the program grew in popularity, Scraplanta started to gather tons of materials which were sold to fund the art programs. In 2022, the Scraplanta team was able to use the donated funds and materials to open Atlanta's very own creative reuse center. Scraplanta Creative Reuse currently has a Tucker retail location that consists of an art supply thrift store, donation processing center, and community workshop.

When the community workshops were launched in March 2023, they were an instant hit. Artists loved being able to volunteer their time to share their skills with the community, and participants were eager to leave the house and create art with people in their community. Our workshops are "pay-what-you-can" and cover a range of skills from jewelry making to crochet!

In 2023, we've hosted 28 in-house workshops with 212 participants. We've also participated in several art activations around the city such as the Oasis Wellness Event at the High Museum, ARTucker's Art in the Park, and even a Craftivism Workshop at the Center for Civil and Human Rights.

We know we could do more, but we need the community to help us expand our program capacity. That's why we're fundraising for a Community Coordinator. Our Community Coordinator would be a part-time crafting dynamo who can maintain and develop Scraplanta's relationships with community organizations and local businesses. With each event, we receive requests for more programs, donation drives, and art pop-ups, but with our current operations, we're only able to maintain a few community events each month. A community coordinator would be the perfect addition to the Scraplanta team.

Play Therapist, Miranda Barzey, hosts a workshop on De-Merit Badges. It was an opportunity for folks to celebrate imperfections and heal through art.
