Western Carolina Rescue Ministries (WCRM) is seeking funding to cover the cost of repairing the flat roof of the campus gym. The buildings on campus were built in the 1920's and have been renovated over the years as needed. The gym roof has been fixed at various intervals over the past 100 years, but is in need of a complete overhaul in order to stop leaks that continue to crop up. Because of persistent leakage, there has been water damage to the underlying beams that are supporting the tar and gravel roof, and without immediate repair, they will continue to rot and compromise the structural integrity of the entire building, making it unsafe for clients or staff to enter and use.
The repair of this building is critical both for the safety of WCRM's clients, as well as their long-term outcomes. By providing a safe space for fitness, clients are able to focus on over-writing bad habits with new, healthy ones that can be easily transferred to "normal" life as they transition out of our care and back into society. Recovery is about fixing the body as much as it is about fixing the mind, and a fitness area allows clients to rebuild their bodies as the programs on campus help them restore their mind. WCRM strives to provide holistic service and access to a fitness facility is just one of the many components of the programs that can help clients move forward to substance free lives.
