Greater Austin Neighborhoods is a locally-based nonprofit that strives to provide access to affordable, attractive, and sustainable homes across Austin and Central Texas while promoting health, education, and welfare in the communities we serve.

We have been active in the greater Austin area since 1999, and we are looking to raise funds to cover swimming lessons and equipment for children at two of the affordable housing communities that we own and operate - Villas of Cordoba and Georgetown Place. We are hoping to raise at least $10,000 in order to provide these services.

Greater Austin Neighborhoods is seeking to enrich the lives of children in our communities by providing them with more recreational opportunities & by beautifying the communal spaces of the residents. We are also aiming to address a systemic problem in low income communities.

In our communities there are over 400 children under the age of 16 who could benefit from these services, and the more we raise beyond our goal, the more we can extend these services to all of them.

We are partnering with Sunsational Swim School to bring this opportunity to our communities.

If your company or organization is interested in any sponsorship opportunities for this project, please reach out to us at info@greateraustinneighborhoods.org.

We will be hosting an end of summer party at each location after the fundraiser has ended, and would like to extend the invitation to all that help us reach our goal.

Part of our mission is to provide supportive services in educational and social programs that improve the quality of life at the apartments we operate and build community understanding. Engaging our communities’ children in recreational activity will further this mission by providing them with opportunities they likely do not have access to elsewhere.

When children don’t know how to swim, they miss out on water-based activities — swimming, water polo, water aerobics, canoeing, etc — that can increase physical activity and thus reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, and more.

Children that live in low-income or minority neighborhoods have had historically limited access to physical activity, especially swimming lessons & facilities, compared to higher income neighborhoods. This lack of recreational access further contributes to inequalities in drowning rates, physical activity, health, and academic performance.

Going beyond physical activity, schools that implement swimming programs have found that reading scores, test scores, and social skills have improved.

This is a life-saving activity, and Greater Austin Neighborhoods believes all children in Austin should have access to it, not just those in select zip codes.

Thank you for your support of this important community project!
