Women Build is Habitat for Humanity’s annual, worldwide event engaging women in an effort to support affordable, quality housing. This year I am raising money to honor the memory of my sister, Dr. Leith Mullings, who died from cancer in December. Dr. Mullings was a scholar, who leaves a body of work on the foundations of racial and class oppression and the intersectionality of race, class, and gender. Above all, she was an activist and public intellectual who worked tirelessly to combat racism and all forms of social inequality, locally and globally. She mentored, worked with, and inspired a generation of scholars and activists who will carry forward her work. Leith was a mother, a sister, an aunt, a grandmother, a grand aunt, and a friend.
I will be joining with women throughout our community to empower local Habitat families. I believe that everyone deserves a place to call home, and I am asking for your help. I may not be able to roll up my sleeves and swing a hammer this year, but I have a goal to raise at least $10,000 to help build a roof to shelter and foundation from which this family can thrive. Leith would be honored to know that money was being raised in her name to help build a house for the Bridges Family. Please donate today and show your support.
About the Bridges Family
Mary was born and raised in Belle Glade. She retired as a Correctional Officer with the Florida Department of Corrections and serves as an Ordained Elder at Straightway Church. Mary is the custodial guardian of four elementary school aged children, Joseph (11), Arniyah (9), Ruth (7), and Isabella (6) in addition to 25-year-old Ricky. The house will be crowded and happy as they grow up together; Mary is looking forward to seeing the children play in their own backyard.
