When my strong Marine, former professional baseball player and world travel writer was diagnosed with ALS, he was determined to live with ALS, not begin dying. Bob never gave up, never complained and never loss his sense of humor or adventure. This foundation shares that vision. They assist you in doing just that.
Bob wrote and published weekly updates about his life with ALS, the joys, the challenges, the impact on family, friends and all the many organizations one needed to continue to live. It was his way to perhaps touch and help another ALS individual or their family and friends. The foundation helped make that possible for him.
Bob never asked “Why me?”. He never was angry. When asked that question He would say, “Why not me.” He knew all life was precious but fleeting. Living with ALS takes many hands and the Joe Martin ALS Foundation is one of those strong, giving hands.
They provided our family with a caregiver two days a week, every week for the entire four years. This was amazing, as it supports the primary family caregiver, me, time to go to the store, get a hair cut or a million other little errands. This person also gave Bob a loving weekly visitor who did all manner of things with him; walks, puzzles, meals, long talks, a friend.
The Foundation was a sounding board for questions. They gave suggestions about equipment, places to go for things we never knew we even needed to LIVE. The staff was always available to take our calls and usually, within a few hours we had someone at our door with the needed item or names and numbers to solve an issue. No question was ignored but answered directly, honestly and with love.
The gift which The Joe Martin Foundation is in our community is beyond my words to describe. The gift to Bob and our family was pure devotion, perseverance and love.
Supporting the Joe Martin ALS Foundation is your act of love.
