General fire disaster relief fund for Anawakalmekak community.

$245,000 goal

The January 2025 Fire Disaster and Wind Storms devastated entire communities, forever impacting thousands of lives. In schools, the resulting traumas that children and youth carry may go unnoticed. At Anawakalmekak we know that community climate resilience is cultivated through family-centered climate regeneration. Indigenous Peoples are only as strong as each of our families are together.

Please consider giving to Anawakalmekak's general disaster fire relief fund for impacted community members who live, labor or learn in our school’s extended community ecosystem. Several of our students’ and staff’s families have been evacuated and displaced. Without a home, food security and adequate transportation the survivors of the fire disasters are in a desperate situation. We are asking our online and in-person communities to help in a collective response to the fundamental needs of these families. Additionally, we are seeking support for responses to the disaster and in preparation for future disasters at Anawakalmekak.

As the only Indigenous autonomous public charter school in Los Angeles County since 2002, these fires have pushed our staff and humble resources to the breaking point. Consider donating to Anawakalmekak so that we can continue to be a resource for disaster preparedness for our families and students.

How the funds will be used:

The largest portion of the funds will be distributed to the families to apply as they need and determine.

Anawakalmekak will also use funds to purchase:

  1. Replenish emergency supply stock for each class
including emergency food, hand crank radios, and
    emergency flashlights

  2. 300 disaster preparedness personal “go packs”
for Anawakalmekak students, staff and families
    and training kits

  3. Solar power stations for each campus to use in
case of blackouts to be used as back up power
    banks

  4. Whole room air filters, N95 face masks, p100
respirators and filters, protective eye wear and
    other disaster preparedness personal protective
    equipment.
