Currently there are four permanent residents at IHR due to age or injury: Jack, Ruby, JD & Ryat. Some horses suffer such horrific mistreatment that they are never able to fully recover. These horses are our permanent residents. IHR is their forever home. They will live out their days in our care, resting and relaxing at the rescue.
Jack the Giant, aka Jack Jack. Jack is the "herd ambassador" and takes his role as the welcoming committee seriously! When new horses arrive, they are scared & unfamiliar. Jack is right there to make them welcome, show them around and help them to feel included in the herd.
He has a permanent injury that will not allow him to be ridden, but Jack makes sure you know he is not going to let it slow him down. He is always trying to be the center of attention.
Jack’s ankle was largely swollen at the time of rescue. After receiving medical care, it was determined that Jack has end stage osteoarthritis of his left fetlock joint. He tore his medial collateral ligament previously, and with his injuries left unattended this lead to arthritis and a loss of most of the articular cartilage in the joint. The injuries to Jack ankle were pre-abandonment, and as a corrective measure his body laid down extra bone to stabilize his joint and reduce movement.
Although moving for this big guy is awkward, veterinarians agree that his injury has healed as well as it would with surgery.
Paco was captured by the BLM in Idaho’s Owyhee desert in 2000 at the approximate age of two. An alleged descendant of Spanish Mustangs, he was first adopted by cattlemen and sold a year later with the name “Not Worth 2 Cents”. For the next nine years, he was sold repeatedly & his last owner adopted the use of a 2×4 piece of lumber as a means of submission. Beaten, starved, and forgotten, he was rescued by IHR in 2009.
After receiving veterinary care and extensive training, Paco is now a healthy weight, will allow a halter, and has become a member of the herd. He can be lunged and approached with treats or feed and is accepting of blankets and brushes along his back. Paco’s successes are testament to the power of rehabilitation.
Sadly Paco passed away at 30 years old this fall. IHR was very grateful that we were able to provide a loving home for 9 years & to be there for him during his final days. He will be greatly missed.
Ruby came to IHR after being abandoned in Swan Valley. It was wintertime, and Ruby and her baby, Buttons, were left cold and without food. A woman from Emmett, Idaho found Ruby and Buttons, took them in, and then contacted IHR. Since being in our care, Ruby has recovered and is now a part of our herd. She is a beautiful, sweet lady. We are lucky to be her forever home.
Here is how your donation will help Jack, Paco, and Ruby:
- $10 = one round of de-wormer treatment for one horse (given twice a year)
- $25 = one bag of supplemental feed
- $50 = hoof trimming for one horse (done every 6-8 weeks)
- $150 = one ton of hay
- $500-$1,000 = one month of training for one
Every donation makes a critical difference for these horses, no matter how big or how small.
You can also help Jack, Paco, and Ruby in lieu of donation by simply sharing this page for them. Sharing their story is just as important as donating!
