In 1998, Earth Day founder Sen. Gaylord Nelson approved formation of Earth/Art Resources (E-art-H), to celebrate Earth Day values, from the intersection of Nature and Art toward a sustainable culture.
Soon E-art-H began diverse eco-cultural activities. Those included the commissioning of public arts works, ranging from poetry and sculpture to music.
Wisconsin composer John Harmon’s EARTH DAY PORTRAIT, for orchestra and narrator/s, was the first commission, in 2001. The composition sets eco-moral texts by John Muir, Aldo Leopold, and Sen. Nelson. On Earth Day 2021, a CD recording was released internationally by Albany Records. The texts were performed by descendants of the three WI environmentalists. A connecting narrative authored by Jon Becker was performed by Patty Loew, a member of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Ojibwe. Renowned conductor Marin Alsop led the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
Commissions have often been collaborative projects, with environmental, cultural, and educational partners. Those have included the UW-Madison School of Music, 1000 Friends of Wisconsin, the Edward Collins Fund for American Music, the North American Prairie Conference, UW-Madison Arboretum, Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, International Cranes Foundation, Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra, Arts Wisconsin (now Create Wisconsin), Wisconsin Youth Choirs, and many others.
On 17 July 2009, E-art-H incorporated as a Wisconsin charitable organization (E039542). E-art-H is a Partner Organization of the Capital Region Advocacy Network for Environmental Sustainability (CRANES).
