--------------
Dan Barnes is awaiting a new lease on life. In 2014 he was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, a progressive and serious condition. Dan’s lung function has decreased over time and he now requires the assistance of supplemental oxygen to help him breathe. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is critical to his survival.
During such a difficult time, Dan is thankful for the love and support of his wife of 37 years, Bonnie, and their family and friends. Dan and Bonnie have four children and one grandson, and his illness prevents him from being the active husband, father, and grandfather he longs to be. Dan looks forward to receiving a transplant that will allow him to be free from supplemental oxygen and improve his quality of life. He enjoys spending time with his grandson, yard work, gardening, and travel, but his health limits those activities now. Dan wants nothing more than to be healthy so he can enjoy quality time with his family, be physically able to take part in activities he enjoys, and regain his appetite so he can enjoy his wife’s cooking again. But right now, he needs your help.
The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million, and that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to his survival as the transplant itself. Dan’s declining health forced him to stop working, further adding to his financial burdens. He worked for General Electric for 36 years, and leaving his career was difficult.
