Marathon Delayed - Fundraising Extended!

Update posted 5 years ago

Given the current environment and restrictions associated with COVID-19, the 50th anniversary of the BMW Dallas Marathon Festival has been moved to the weekend of April 30 – May 2, 2021.

Though it is disappointing to have to wait a few more months, it's a sigh of relief to know we will be safe while running in close quarters.

The race organized also offered a virtual race in December, but for my first marathon, I want to have the whole experience, in-person, so I am willing to wait.

That also means you get a few more months to donate and help those who are fighting wrongful convictions and wrongful incarnations.

Today is #WrongfulConvictionsDay and is a great time to highlight all the wonderful work that The Innocence Project and all the wonderful partner organizations in The Innocence Network is doing.

You can check out all of their current updates here: https://www.innocenceproject.org/latest/

Thanks for taking the time to check it out and for donating!

When you think of the justice system and evidence in criminal cases, you likely think of DNA evidence and testing. But thousands of people were convicted before the prevalence of DNA testing and their convictions were based on spurious evidence or scientific theories and methods that have since been disproven or debunked. That means thousands of people are sitting in jail waiting for the chance to re-open their cases. The Innocence Project works to make sure that all people – those wrongfully convicted in the past and those who will be accused in the future – have access to a fair justice system.

I am running the Dallas Marathon to raise money for The Innocence Project, the leading nonprofit organization in the country dedicated freeing the staggering number of innocent people who remain incarcerated and to bring reform to the system responsible for their unjust imprisonment.

Making a donation today will help The Innocence Project save more lives and reform our justice system, so please help me meet my goal!

** If the marathon is delayed due to COVID-19, the organizers have a contingency plan to reschedule the race for spring 2021. 100% of the money you donate will go to The Innocence Project in real time, and any race delay will not have an impact on your donation.**

From the Innocence Project:

The Innocence Project's mission is to free the staggering number of innocent people who remain incarcerated, and to bring reform to the system responsible for their unjust imprisonment.

  • Exonerate. The Innocence Project represents clients seeking post-conviction DNA testing to prove their innocence. We also consult on a number of cases on appeal in which the defendant is represented by primary counsel and we provide information and background on DNA testing litigation. To date, 367 people in the United States have been exonerated by DNA testing, including 21 who served time on death row.
  • Improve. The Innocence Project’s Strategic Litigation department works through the courts and the legal system to address the leading causes of wrongful conviction and prevent future injustice.
  • Reform. The Innocence Project’s policy department works with Congress, state legislatures and local leaders to pass laws and policies that prevent wrongful convictions and make it easier for the innocent to receive justice.
  • Support. The Innocence Project aims to meet the varied and individualized needs of each of their clients upon their release.
  • Educate. A top priority is to improve the accuracy and reliability of forensic science. We work at the federal level to encourage science-based evaluation of validity of forensic disciplines, funding for research, development of national standards, and support for judicial training.
