I recently joined a phenomenal non-profit organization, EmpowHer Institute (“EmpowHer”). Since 2003, EmpowHer has been the only non-profit in Los Angeles that has programs that are fully integrated into the school day. EmpowHer partners with 13 Title I middle and high schools and one community site to provide social-emotional and skills-based learning courses to teach girls how to navigate the world and become their most successful selves through a plethora of immersive learning programs that are credited towards the student’s matriculation.

EmpowHer has a Social Justice STEAM Camp, which is the first and only of its kind in the nation. The Camp introduces girls from marginalized communities to a broader worldview by training the girls in an immersive marine science experience. Not only are they trained in marine biology, but they learn college-level concepts while living on a college campus. They are in the field everyday at the beach or lab studying the resiliency and impact of climate change on marine ecology and comparing and contrasting that to the resilience and impact on marginalized communities. They have the opportunity to receive scuba diving and sailing certificates in addition to a host of other skills the curriculum offers. EmpowHer is developing a workforce of women that will ultimately be able to be socially conscious in utilizing  STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) to solve some of the world’s greatest issues. Women who reflect the communities most impacted by these issues and who will advocate for ethical and equitable solutions.

Please help EmpowHer with its mission to help girls in marginalized communities by making a donation.
