Nationally, there are over 2.7 million children with an incarcerated parent and 105,000 in New York State, yet there are few social service organizations and government policies in place to support their unique needs, interests and concerns. Without intervention, these children are 6x more likely to repeat the cycle and enter the criminal justice system.
Intergenerational criminal justice contact leaves children vulnerable to elevated levels of anxiety, fear, anger and depression These children are often stigmatized, lose self-esteem, withdraw emotionally, or become truant.
Established in 2009 by Founder and President, Sharon Content, Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC) is a nonprofit in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, with a mission to embrace children of incarcerated parents and empower them to break the cycle of intergenerational involvement in the criminal justice system. Annually we serve 350 children and families through:
After School and Summer Day Camp
One-to-one Mentoring
Mental Health Services
Family Engagement Program
