For the first time, all four of us will be paddling the 30+ Mile Crossing from Catalina Island to the Newport Beach Pier. We are an Ocean family, yet we never would have imagined doing something this crazy if not for Ben... A kid we never met yet somehow inspired us to go beyond our limits and prone paddle across the Pacific Ocean like a bunch of crazed Vikings... This will be Erika's and Noah's first crossing. Cole and Matt will be on their third.
We paddle for Ben. With our oldest son Cole being a Laguna Beach Lifeguard and avid surfer, it's hard to ignore the fact he is on the same path Ben took with his love for the ocean and living in service. This makes this event all the more meaningful and special to us.
Please help support our fundraising efforts for the Ben Carlson Foundation. In doing so, know you are saving lives around the world and helping student lifeguard athletes pursue college degrees as they follow their paths wherever they may lead.
Bens Story:
For those of you who don't know, Ben Carlson was a veteran lifeguard who gave his life saving a stranger in Newport Beach on July 6th, 2014. He was 32 years old. By all accounts, he was a quality person who led a life of service and he was enamored with the Ocean from an early age. He loved his job. He left the World too soon and too suddenly, but he led a life full of purpose and passion.
Although he died tragically, Ben Carlson died a humble hero and what happened next is the stuff of miracles and legend. Thanks to his close friends and family who dedicated themselves to telling his story and raising awareness around water safety, Ben has saved more lives around the world than he could ever have saved patrolling the beaches of Newport Beach.
Today, the Ben Carlson Foundation is responsible for supporting under resourced lifeguard agencies in Nicaragua, Puerto Escondido, Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo, South Africa and more. In addition, the Foundation gives scholarships to students who have dedicated themselves to lifeguarding.
