IHELP provides one-on-one, free, in-home/virtual services to immigrants and refugees lacking access to needed educational opportunities. IHELP views English learning as a tool for empowerment and connection with our community. Due to barriers including the expense of childcare and an almost non-existent public transit system, it can be extremely difficult for adults to attend English classes.

Our program depends on volunteer tutors who give their time each week to visit students in their homes and provide lessons. One of our volunteer tutors shared her reason for getting involved: "As I learned more about the tragedies and hardships that refugees and asylum seekers face, I thought the least I could do was offer friendship and support to a few people who have found their way to safety in our country. I believe that teaching English to my student is making her life a little easier as she navigates life in the United States."

The St. Louis region ranks third among the nation's top 20 metros for foreign-born population growth. As increasing numbers of immigrant families resettle in the region, IHELP provides a pathway to English language skills, social connection, community engagement, and economic mobility. Students feel secure in the environment of one-on-one classes with a trusted teacher and friend.

Our Adult Program lessons include reading, writing, spoken English, and practical skills for effectively navigating the culture and systems of the United States. Our Youth Program, started in 2022, also consists of one-on-one lessons in students' homes after school, tailored to their specific needs.

At IHELP, we often talk about sharing the joy of independence - the joy of being able to do something on your own that you once needed much more help and support to do. Tutor Rebecca shared of her student, “Manjula told me that she went to a dental appointment by herself. She was very proud of herself for being confident enough to do so without her husband. She told me her classes with me made this possible. Of course, this made me very happy.”

We hope you'll join us in supporting accessible English education for immigrants and refugees across the St. Louis community!
