Update #5
CLEO NEEDS SPONSORS. Help her on this year's Giving Day.
"Hi, I’m Cleo. I was born in the wild in 1983, and I’ve been at Chimfunshi since I was three years old. In my younger days, I was quite the escape artist—one of the best you’ve ever seen! I still remember the day I slipped out of my enclosure and stole a whole bag of guavas. I spent the entire day sitting in a tree, enjoying my stolen feast, while the humans searched for me. Eventually, I strolled back into my enclosure like nothing ever happened!
Now, at 41, I’ve settled down. These days, I lovingly take care of two little orphans, Andy and Charlie, along with my daughter, CC. We’re a playful bunch, and I don’t think about escaping anymore—those wild days are behind me!"
Cleo was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1983 and then fell victim to poachers. She was bought by a smuggler in Zambia and brought to Chimfunshi in 1986 after her owners realised they could no longer cope with her. Cleo is a multi-talented mother and very affectionate. And she loves food! This passion made Cleo a real escape artist. Time and again, she found ways out of the chimpanzee enclosure to visit the nearest food store and enjoy what she found there. Since 2019, she has been living in a special enclosure for escape artists at Chimfunshi.
As with the other escape artists, you can never be sure these highly intelligent animals won't find a way out, so keepers have to keep a close eye on Cleo and the others. The zookeepers also try to appease Cleo's passion for food by giving her regular fruit and vegetable treats. This intensive care is very expensive and we are desperately looking for sponsors to help us give Cleo the best life possible - even a monthly contribution of €10 can make a big difference and help secure Cleo's care.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPONSOR CLEO? Or make a one-off donation for an extra portion of fruits and veggies or her health care?
Please support Cleo with a small donation or become her sponsor for a year or more. As a sponsor, you will receive regular updates on Cleo's life and photos once a year.
We are Chimfunshi Germany and we are committed to the protection of endangered chimpanzees. With this fundraising campaign we support the CHIMFUNSHI WILDLIFE ORPHANAGE in Northern Zambia.
CHIMFUNSHI is one of the largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world. It is home to more than 150 chimpanzees on more than 10,000 hectares of forested land. The sanctuary welcomes primates from all over the world and from regions of Africa where there are no sanctuaries. Chimfunshi provides sanctuary for chimpanzees of all ages and backgrounds, caring for and nurturing them throughout their lives in near-natural living conditions.
Sign up to our newsletter to follow our efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and care for over 150 chimpanzees affected by illegal wildlife trade and habitat destruction.
The challenge of providing adequate care for over 150 chimpanzees is immense. The increasing number of chimpanzees and the additional demands for food, staff and enclosure space require significant investment. Today, Chimfunshi is struggling to meet these needs for all the chimpanzees on site, for example, an additional species-appropriate enclosure is urgently needed.
However, providing appropriate care for over 150 chimpanzees comes at a significant cost. The ability to take in more chimpanzees in need and provide appropriate care for all of them depends more than ever on our support.
That is why we are asking you to BECOME A SPONSOR OF ONE OF CHIMFUNSHI'S CHIMPANZEE. By doing so, you will be ensuring his/her continued care, nursing and medical attention.
If you would like to support Chimfunshi's chimpanzees in general, rather than just one individual, we ask that you make a donation towards food and medical care.
BECOME A CHIMPANZEE SPONSOR for an amount of just $10 per month (at least 12 months) or $120 per year.
HELP CHIMFUNSHI WITH CHIMP CARE with a donation of $20 or more.
SUPPORT A CHIMP BEYOND THAT by doubling your sponsorship to $240 and enable us to supplement the diet with vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables and expand the chimpanzees' habitats at our sanctuaries.
All money raised through our sponsorship programme goes directly towards the care of our chimpanzees. Your compassion and generosity will help us provide a happy, healthy and protected life for our beloved residents.
