Grassroots Fundraiser for:

Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores

Mission

To empower low-wage and immigrant workers to secure dignity and justice at work and in the community. We educate workers about their rights, help them organize when rights are violated, and take action to secure those rights. The voices of those who power the economy should have weight in a democratic society, and they deserve all benefits provided by law.

Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2022.  Give today to support Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores!

Your support allows us to focus on the pressing issues facing our immigrant worker constituency 1. Addressing overall conditions and exploitation in the seafood processing industry through our Pescando Justicia (Fishing for Justice) campaign, including re-launching our efforts to promote a workplace Code of Conduct; 2. Continuing our work on sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based abuse. 3. Basic workers’ rights education and addressing workplace health and safety. 4. Enhanced leadership training so workers can effectively develop their own strategies to combat workplace abuses. 5. Advocacy around immigrants’ rights more broadly through our coalition work. 6. Continuing to support our community through the COVID-19 pandemic and reaching new constituencies

Meet one of our worker-leaders who is making a difference

Mirna Pacajá is an indigenous Maya K’iche’ woman who helped lead a successful organizing campaign at Atlantic Capes Fisheries, where she has worked for many years and where there was rampant wage theft, sexual harassment, and lack of benefits for the largely immigrant work force – and retaliation against those who spoke up. During the course of this campaign, CCT learned that Mirna and several other women had been sexually harassed by a supervisor, and the women brought a successful action against the company and the temporary agency through which they were hired, winning a $675,000 settlement. Through the leadership of Mirna and her colleagues, workers at Atlantic Capes now enjoy many benefits such as paid sick leave and vacations and are treated with dignity and respect by their employer. Mirna is now a leader in the effort to establish a Code of Conduct in the regional seafood processing industry, through a campaign launched by CCT and its legal partner, Justice at Work, called Pescando Justicia/Fishing for Justice.
