Simon Says- thank you!
Thank you everyone for your donations! We are off to a great start! A big thank you to everyone who shared my story and all of the likes! If you have had the pleasure to meet me, you know that I am not shy- especially if you have treats 💟 Tell everyone about me- the party planning goat of Rivers Edge!
Hey everyone! I am Simon, the happy goat at Rivers Edge Horse Rescue. I'm planning a very big birthday celebration for my horse sister, Fury! Just last month, Fury was very sick with Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) and almost died. I watched over her from my stall in the barn for many weeks, hoping and praying that she would be healthy enough to go out to play again. Mom was at her side, night and day... And now, guess what?! Fury is doing great! She has been recovering and getting stronger every day! I really love her so much, even if she is a horse. We really developed such a strong bond during those long days and nights when everything was so uncertain. Fury is my BFF and now it is time to do something special for her!
Simon Says it is time to celebrate! It is spring and the grass and flowers are growing again! I know that all the humans are practicing social distancing and can't come to the farm- but horses still want to have fun! It might seem a little unusual for a handsome goat like myself to undertake such a big task, but why not? Now I know that you might be asking yourself, what does Simon need for this epic event?
Hay-lots and lots of hay! Did you know it costs about $10 a day to feed a horse here at REHR? The horses have been rescued from some terrible places and most of them were starving when they got here. Mom makes sure that everyone has plenty to eat and that means lots of hay and special soaked grain for the older horses.
Pedicures- Hoof care is so important and helps to keep everyone in tip top shape. We have 21 horses- that's 84 hoofs! Whoa! that's a lot of hoofs! The farrier comes to the farm to make sure everyone has healthy hoofs.
Teeth floating- Even though horses don't like to see the dentist, teeth floating is super important! Horses live by their ability to chew. Badly chewed food leads to all sorts of problems including poor absorption of the critical calories and minerals that a horse needs to maintain weight, keep a balanced metabolism, have energy and generally stay healthy.
Medical bills- So this is a really big deal. When Fury was sick, Mom did everything she could to help her survive. The vet was here a lot- even in the middle of the night- fighting to help save Fury. It was all worth it, but we still have a very big bill to pay.
Goat fencing- Well, ok. This ask is for me. Now that Fury is feeling better, she is getting outside more often. Soon she will rejoin the herd. Since I am the only goat here, it would really be great to have some goat friends. We will need our own area to hang out in, so we need goat fencing panels. I kid you not! (just a little goat humor 😊)

Much love to all of you! I couldn't plan this surprise party for my sister without you. It's not easy for a goat to keep such a big secret!
love,
Simon
