Grassroots Fundraiser for API Equality - LA

API Equality-LA’s mission is to build power in the Asian and Pacific Islander community to achieve LGBTQ equality and racial and social justice. API Equality - LA has received a Community Organizing Grant from the Peace Development Fund and all of the money raised from this fundraiser will be added to that grant to help support their organizing in 2020.  Please make a contribution today to support API Equality - LA and read more about their work below.

"API Equality-LA’s core work consists of being key members of policy and advocacy coalitions that can hold leaders accountable to API LGBTQ people, organizing the local API LGBTQ community in the greater LA area, dismantling homophobia and transphobia in API communities through community outreach and community education, and providing a space for leaders to develop their political analyses while also organizing their peers.

Our policy and advocacy work means that API Equality-LA shows up alongside other queer and trans groups to write policies that will mean greater access to mental health resources that are affirming and culturally relevant to queer and trans Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Our community organizing, dismantling homophobia and transphobia work, and leadership development work are all linked together. We train queer and trans API leaders to facilitate group discussions on issues that matter to their peers and to organize the attendees to become leaders in our community. We also train our leaders to coordinate and lead our dismantling homophobia and transphobia work that happens at community and cultural events like the 626 Night Market, which is a large-scale Asian market with over 100,000 attendees."

API Equality's COVID-19 Response:

"API Equality-LA has shifted our programming online, focusing on providing emotional and social support for API LGBTQ community members in the greater Los Angeles area through virtual community building events, sharing mental health resources and webinars, and doing community outreach. As we track how our communities are being impacted by anti-Asian violence, increased vulnerability to domestic violence, heightened mental health issues, and lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate information and resources, we have also noticed an increase in volunteers pitching in to plan events and support their community. Together, we are working to address the unique impacts of COVID-19 on API LGBTQ communities."
