Bentley’s Journey towards a Service Dog

Hi my name is Bentley! I qualify and have been approved to get a service dog from 4 Paws for Ability. 

I am 8 years old and have been diagnosed with autism, sensory processing disorder, and anxiety. All of these things impact me in many ways, making simple things very difficult. At times, I am overwhelmed and overstimulated which causes me to shut down or become non verbal, as I try to self regulate. Sometimes when my surroundings are too much, I run away to try and escape these feelings. 

Service dogs are trained to help people like me cope and calm down and can even help prevent these  occurrences. The dog can provide deep pressure which helps calm my body. The dog will be trained to disrupt and distract me if I am behaving in an unsafe way, or shut down, and then immediately work with me to help me self regulate. I can even have a special harness and leash to keep my dog attached, keeping me safe and close to my parents while in public. In the scary event that I do run away, the dog will help my family find me quickly. This will help me feel safe. 

I learned about 4 Paws service dogs when I was able to visit a friend. I was able to interact with the dog to see how much it helped me. It was amazing to feel safe, protected and loved by the dog. I know I will benefit from having my very own service dog.   

4 Paws For Ability is making it possible for me to get a service dog specifically trained for my needs! It will cost between $40,000 - $60,000 for the specialized training that will make this dog the best partner for me. To do my part, my family and I need to raise $20,000 to help cover the cost.
