San Diego Audubon needs your help to protect the endangered Ridgway’s Rail.

The Light-footed Ridgway’s Rail is endangered at the federal and state level because these birds rely on southern California’s coastal salt marshes, most of which have been filled in, modified, or are too small to support a resilient population. They are the perfect species to demonstrate the impact of habitat loss and our legacy of conservation. San Diego has precious few remaining wetlands, and there is still much work to be done to protect the rails that live in them from predators (cats and other four legged human-subsidized mammals) and pollution (water, noise and light). We need to restore this habitat, so the rails can increase their numbers to a sustainable level. We are currently advocating for more wetlands through our ReWild Mission Bay effort, along with our Coalition of community partners.

In partnership with the UC San Diego Natural Reserve System, we are piloting a monitoring program for the endangered Ridgway’s Rail population in Kendall-Frost Marsh using nest platform live-streaming cameras. We also partner with the UCSD Natural Reserve System, City of San Diego, Living Coast Discovery Center and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service who are running the captive breeding program to release rails in Kendall-Frost Marsh.

The Ridgway’s Rail habitat restoration project is currently focused on Kendall-Frost Marsh and the San Diego River, and we envision expanding this project to the Famosa Slough, Sweetwater Marsh, J Street Marsh and the Otay River estuary, where rails need the same kind of help.

San Diego Audubon’s overarching project goal is to monitor this declining endangered species, restore their habitats, and provide a safe sanctuary to ensure their survival.

We hope you’ll consider supporting Ridgway’s Rail conservation through a gift to San Diego Audubon today. Any donation amount makes a difference! Thank you in advance for supporting San Diego Audubon, and for committing to a brighter future for the Ridgway’s Rail and other wildlife.
