I began my work as Development Director at Women Helping Women in July. But, if you know me well, you know that my participation in the movement to end gender-based violence began long before that.
In April of 2019, I created @whatiwishpeopleknew, a social awareness program meant to showcase the stories of survivors, and the things they wish the world knew about their rapists.
To this day, one of the things that stands out the most to me is the number of people who asked me if their experience "counted." If the violence perpetrated against them "was accepted," as rape. If their story mattered.
Their stories always mattered. They still do. Mine did. Mine does. Yours did. Your's does.
Women Helping Women is on track to serve around 9,000 survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking in 2023. It will educate hundreds of students on how to prevent gender-based violence. It will meet survivors where they are, as they are, as it has for the last fifty years.
So, this #CincinnatiGives season, I am asking you to skip the coffee, and chip in $5, $10, $50, whatever you can afford to support the movement.
Together, I know in our lifetime we will end gender-based violence. We just cannot do it alone.
